The Edge Is Here. And It’s Here Now!

The Edge Is Here. And It's Here Now.

Recently, IDC said that by next year 40% of the data we access will be stored, processed, analyzed, and acted upon, close to, or at the edge of a network. As I see it, this is due in part to the greater acceptance of the Internet of Things along with the availability of more computer processing power that is now available at lower cost, which in turn is enabling us to expand our reach to a range of devices that gather, analyze and react to data in a variety of applications. This combination has allowed us to move from just “connected devices” to connected devices that redistribute and process data and analytics independently at the Edge.

The Edge is contributing to a significant shift in the way we are acquiring information, interacting with it, and making decisions. It is enabling us to expand our reach to a new range of equipment and devices to deliver relevant outcomes.

Data Needs Order

organizing data through a funnel illustration

The Data revolution has come about due to the huge increase in the amount of information we're able to capture and analyse from an ever growing number of sources. Data is transforming everything; especially data in real time. Data can change the way companies in every industry do business and assess and manage operational performance. Corporations are directing executives and managers to implement or improve upon organizational initiatives such as Sustainability, Energy Management, Maintenance, Operation Management, Capital Improvements, Project Management and Facility Management.

However, when it comes to data, most organizations do not have a unified data management plan for their building(s). What passes for a "data management plan" consists of a database associated with building equipment such as HVAC and maybe few of the other systems and equipment that make up the building operational assets.

The Other "I" in IoT

The Other I in IoT

We’ve all heard of the advertising slogan, “Pork, the Other White Meat“. Well, in the Internet of Things, we have the other “I" in IoT.

When we see, hear and mention IoT, we immediately think the “I” refers to the Internet and rightly so, it does. However, there is another “I” that gets lost in all the jargon. This “I” sits quietly behind the scenes in a true IoT environment and is equally as important and deserves its place in the spotlight.
